Barber: Knoxville: Summer of 1915, Op. 15
Beethoven: Symphony No. 9, Op. 125, in D minor
Tonight marks the fourth performance at the Peninsula Music Festival of Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915. It was first performed in 1954 with Helen George, soprano, and Thor Johnson conducting. It was peformed in 1983 with Irene Gubrud, soprano, and William McGlaughlin conducting and most recently in 1994 with Georgine Resick and Byron Hanson conducting. Tonight's performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony is the second at the Festival. It was first performed at PMF in 2002 with the Apollo Chorus and Victor Yampolsky conducting.
