The Peninsula Music Festival - The Rehearsal - by Charles L. Peterson

Who is Who:
Seated left to right:  Max Huls, prinicipal violin; Janet Sutter, violin; Joan DerHovsepian, principal viola; Valentin Zhuk and Marilyn McDonald, Co-Concertmasters; behind Valentin is Rika Seko, violin.  On the podium is Victor Yampolsky, Music Director and Conductor.  At the piano is John Browning.  The ghost of the founding conductor, Thor Johnson, hovers over the rehearsal.

“The Rehearsal” is intended as a tribute to the Peninsula Music Festival on its 50th Anniversary. It struck me that the magnificent music we have all enjoyed for so many years is the result of advance preparation by dedicated, professional musicians, beautifully unified under superb leadership in remarkably brief rehearsals. I first attended rehearsals of the Festival Orchestra in the mid-1950s when Thor Johnson was establishing what would become the enduring qualities of the Festival. Now, almost 50 years later, I imagined his benign spirit hovering over a rehearsal under Maestro Victor Yampolsky, enjoying again the amazing process of blending so many individual talents into one beautiful sound. It’s in rehearsal that it all comes together.

I tried to convey some of the spirit of these rehearsals by imagining myself somewhere among the violas, immersed in the determined spirit of musicians seeking that harmonious unity; informal, good humored, but completely dedicated to "getting it right." — Charles L. Peterson
